HMRC announces Transitional Simplified Procedures for customs, should we leave the EU without a deal

HMRC have written to 145,000 VAT-registered businesses trading with the EU about the actions they should take in order to take advantage of simplified importing procedures in the event of No Deal.

The procedures have been put in place for a transitional period of one year to give businesses time to adjust to life outside of the EU.

The British Chamber of Commerce responded to the announcement:

“In the case of No Deal, it is reassuring that HMRC are introducing these Transitional Simplified Procedures, which will make importing easier by simplifying the declarations at the border and postponing the payment of import duties that would otherwise be due.”
